How to Genderbend in UTAU Empty How to Genderbend in UTAU

Post by Guest Wed Jun 30, 2010 3:26 pm

Okay, this is as much a check for my own understanding as much a tutorial for other utau users interested in genderbending their utaus. Everything I know about this comes from what halo taught me, she is the specialist in this area. *chuckles* Other methods I learned from trial and error.

    Here we go!

    Part 1. Understanding fundamental frequency:

so what makes male utaus different from female utaus? The answer is found in their voice frequency averages. If you pull up the UTAU profile, you can see the calculated voice range.

    Female Example:
    Spoiler:
as you can see the female bank is calculated to have a voice frequency of E4. This means that notes will sound most natural if you place it on the "4" octave.

    Male Example:
    Spoiler:
A male UTAU has a frequency average of "3". This means that notes will sound optimal in the 3 octave range.

Part 2. Traditional method of genderbending utaus (setting gflags and changing BRE method.)

    Female to Male:
    1. get out a female ust in the "4" octave
    Example:
    Spoiler:

    2. highlight all notes by hitting ctrl+A and drag it into the "3" octave. Remember that if it's originally at G4, it must be dragged to G3 and likewise. The note name must match or else it will become off tune.
    Example:
    Spoiler:

    3. Go into tools, click note default, click general to bring up the screen for setting gflags and BRE.
    Example:
    Spoiler:

    4. For a female to male, lower Bre to the 5-10 mark (this increases the range of the vocals and decreases the slurrings.). Then set the gflags to the +10 to +15 mark. There are some female utaus that need gflags raised all the way to +30. Depending on how loli the source voice. Example: teto is ted @ Gflag +25- +30 range.
    Example:
    Spoiler:
You'll want to record these settings down for future reference. These settings are how you can achieve your genderbend's voice.

    Male to Female:
I need to work on this department. The theory is the same, drag the ust up to octave 4 and octave 3. Do the reverse and make gflags to g-10 to g-15, but don't mess with BRE. Leave it alone~ ne~

To be honest, dragging utaus into a different octave will lower the quality somewhat. Only use genderbends if your voicebank is high quality enough to handle it please. OTL

Part 3: Making a Permanent Voicebank of the opposite gender

This will preserve the quality greatly. The theory behind it is to record in the octave of the opposite sex. For girls, record a low and husky voice sample. For guys, record in high falsetto??? UTAU program will recognize it as the "3" or "4" octave and you have a permanent genderbend voicebank.

It can be done. Kanipan's voice actress is obviously female, but her bank registers in the "3" octave and outputs a shota-like voice.
    Example:
    Spoiler:

Part 4: Pitching a song in an audio editing program
This is my least favorite way to make genderbends, but I suspect most of the vocaloid genderbends are made with this method. You take a finished song (mixed with vocal and karaoke backing) and apply pitch change to it. In audacity it is -18.00 for female to male. I would never recommend pitchbend for male to female because it makes everything sound like a chipmunk. The downside of this method is that you are also pitchbending the karaoke, it will lower the quality of the song tremendously.

and we're finished with this tutorial. *bows* Please contribute your knowledge and make genderbending in utau even better~

lol if I wanted to make a genderbend-bank for my UTAU, all I have to do is sing~

Being a girl and recording male UTAUs is fun~ OTL

I remember when I found out not ALL female UTAUloids can be genderbended g+15 to make a sexy low-ish voice XD
Dude, Hayao is so weird that he can manage it without sounding completely retarded.

But he WAS recorded in the 3 octave, I just bothered checking. :'C Just, it's at G#3, so fairly high in the octave.
Even more surprising, his VCVs were at A#3 XD Higher voice what.
    And his English is A3.
Ha. Funny I never checked these before XD
Seems pretty good for a VK-Based UTAUloid, though.

This is a good resource though.

Oh FFFFFFFFFF- okay, now I know why yami sounds like sh-- genderbent. Everything I have is at E4 or F4. I didn't know that you achieved an octave like G#3.

No wonder, Hayao's voice is frickin' excellent. He is in truth; considered a male utau by utau editor.

I'm going to change the gflag range form to +10 and +15.

yep, I'm still learning about utau. My VCV otos are no good, haha.

    ...I'm confused as to Yami's gender. o3o

Anyway, for some female voicebanks they still sound like girls in the g10-g15 range. For some you have to go as high as g30 to get a convincing male voice. :3 (Ted Kasane is Teto at g25-g30.)

ah, yes. The mystery of my utau. What is it's true gender, I wonder? :V I'm sorry, but even I can't answer that.

    I thought about it and I basically gave up. It's going to be a girl if you want it to be a girl. According to mae blythe, it is. ^^;;
It's a boy if you want it to be a boy. Haha.

Thanks for your input, anything on turning male to female?

I guess I'll go by the wiki entry of "male, but convincing trap" for now. |D

    You basically do the reverse of female to male (g-10 to g-30), though, don't set the breathiness too high or it sounds like poopie. xD;;

yay! I'm glad you have your personal opinion on it. Nice to know some people take my wiki entry seriously. I just mostly troll around on there. :'D & Thank you for the insight on genderbending male to female. Nice to know (I will now go play with yoshi this way.)

Urm, question...how do I remove this genderbend from my UTAUloid? I set it to a certain genderbend, and now, everytime I open UTAU and put a syllable, it has the g+ flags and what not. How do I stop UTAU from doing this?

I tried removing it and setting it back to what it was before I put the genderbend, but it doesn't work.

okay, open the ust. Press CTRL+A to highlight all the notes. Right click, open properties (last option). Set Bre to 50 and clear everything in the flag box. And there's your UTAU's voice in it's pure and unadulterated state. ^^

Is it a very bad sign if your UTAU has a frequency of B2?

Not at all if it's a very low pitched voice (male or female! Low voiced females are cool, too). Actually it's very cool if it's like that naturally because it's not very common.

Another reason could be that you have a lot of samples that have long parts where that frequency is very low. It could be that your samples have long silences with low frequency or you have a lot of extra sounds like "breathing" because those also have very low frequencies.
That frequency in the info box is an average meausure so the normal frequency can end masked but those parts.

I doubt anybody will find it useful or if it's right at all but if I want to know the average frequency of a sound sample, in UTAU I use:
Right click on empty space and choose "Sound list...", then I double click on the sample I want to check and it automatically goes to the pianoroll in its natural frequency.

@irei1as: Thanks for the explanation, I guess it's a naturally occurring one based on what you said since I actually trimmed down all breathing at the start and end of the samples so that it just captures the sound I need.

Anyway my samples look a lot like this:

I would like to add that Kaen broke the male mold by being recorded at G2. Not all males have to be recorded at the 3, if your voice can sound good lower.

Otherwise this is a very solid tutorial. Smile

    Interesting, my female UTAU who actually only has five sounds recorded is in the D#3 range....but then again I did record her myself with my epic[lolwut] genderbending skills....I sang her sounds in a higher voice and changed the pitch with audacity ;w;

while my male UTAU has a C3 range. Maybe I should just get my friend to record sounds for my female UTAU, since she sounds too much like a higher pitched Mikado(my male utau)
