Do you identify more with your nationality or ethnicity?

Post by Aster Selene on Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:39 pm

Both my parents were born in South Korea (they moved to America when they were teenagers) and I was born and raised in America.

Most of the time I identify more with my American self and consider myself more American than Korean, and don't quite like it when people label me as someone with Korean mores and cultures, etc.

But online I seem to like to identify with my Korean self more (even before getting into UTAU), making an effort to learn and understand and read Korean, and to get in touch with Korean culture, language, ideas, etc. Perhaps this is because online, I don't let people see my extremelyblatantAsian face, but hey, you never know.

Do guess that really depends. What do call an "American" other than a conjoined other than a box of conjoined nationalities?

I'm Irish, German, Native American, British, and a few more I could list.

I don't identify with any except that I'm a PROUD American.

I might not be proud of somethings my country does, but I am proud of my country.-

XD So I guess for me, Nationality. I'm not in touch with anything but my Native American [Cherokee and Sioux]

    Ethnicity.

I consider myself more of a Singaporean than a Chinese though. I don't really like to consider myself as a New Zealander because...idk lol.

I'm not a loud, annoying, stupid and bad-mannered person >:C also I don't like to partying, getting drunk and listen to stupid music like the chilean teenagers so, that's why.
Although, I love that I have Araucanian blood (My dad's grandpa was Araucanian). I love that kind of ancient stuff ^^

    Oh man xD

    Well, I LOVE playing the 'oh I'm hispanic card' despite the fact I don't know a lick of Spanish xD;;
Well, I know enough to get by, but....

I'm proud of all the blood I have, but at the same time I see myself as 'American'
Is there such a thing as 'American'?
Not really. (unless you're native american)
I feel like it s a bit more of a patriotic thing then a real nationality thing.

I associate more with my nationality, because my ethnicity is really just a mix. My family's been in America for the past four or five generations or so. I've got german, american indian, scotch, dutch, irish, welsh, russian, and ethnic jew in me. I also associate myself with where I came from in the US, which is the northwest. I find that I identify a lot more with people there (generally speaking) than in the southeast, which is where I live now. It might seem like splitting hairs, but it's definitely a difference to me. lol.

Uhh, I've never really thought about it that in depth.
Rather than identify, I simply think of myself as more interested in one more than the other.

Because I've grown up in the culture of my nationality, it's boring to learn about.
But because I've only grown up with bits and pieces of my ethnicity fed in through my nationality, it's more interesting to learn and talk about.

So personally rather than identifying, it's just a matter of what is more interesting.

I'm Irish, Scottish, English, and a little French. Really the only time it ever comes up is on St. Patrick's Day or when I complain about being pale. XD And Irish dancing in grade school, but that was mostly the nuns.

But for the most part I'm just a proud American. ^__^

i'm ashkenazi jewish, german, french and well most of europe XD; i do have some black in me from one of my grandfathers as well, so i may have some long lost heritage in africa, i don't really know though. that's all i mostly know of my heritage.

i'm not sure where i stand in ethnicity or nationality as i'm a mutt, but i do like hearing some things about history from other countries and talking about it. and german is one of the few languages i'd really love to learn and i do love norse mythology and the different alterations between countries.

so i guess i follow more of germany than anything.

i don't really consider myself a texan though, i don't even have the accent even though i was born and raised here. but i do get annoyed when people think that only rednecks and blah blah blah live here because those are lies and rumors, we even created many of the things that most people use to this very day. so i might have some of that blood running through my veins XD

oh right.. i do have a rich side of my family that's selfish and rude that live in texas so usually during those family reunions i dine and dash 8'D

there is a part of my family that are spanish but i don't have that heritage and most of my family [all together] are musicians.
you may even know a few of these musicians (clicky he's the young on in the video josh pinkham and finally my great granddad benny thomasson clicky), but i myself don't know how to play an instrument and i've only played piano once and i played chopsticks by ear.

*EDIT i somehow forgot the irish in me. most of my family have red hair i was glad it skipped me 8'D

...I'm American, and look American. My family on my mom's side descends from Europe. Pretty much the west half of Europe :p
My dad's REAL family were Koreans, but we think that maybe he had some western in him because I had blond hair and green eyes.
I identify myself as an Oregonian :3 but there's no option for that in most forums, so I go with 'other' or multi racial =3=
