    You're not.
You're supposed to record it all together, without spaces. If you record like you just did, it sounds.... bad. In fact, it doesn't even sound like triphones. And it's slurry.
I would suggest listening to other UTAUs triphonic samples before starting a triphonic bank. Good examples are Teto, Hayao, Yoshi, and Ritsu.

Moe, how is this spam .___. ???

They aren't really necessary, but I think it depends on the voice. I have a lower voice, so I kind of need high octave shifts so the voice doesn't grate. Whereas someone with a high voice might need to record some lower samples to make the lower notes smoother.
But most people don't use any.

    ..............
That is NOT how you record VCVs XD AAAaAAaiIIiaAAauUUueEEeaAA is how I record them. ^^'' And more or less how Ritsu was recorded.
No gaps as large as that, man.
Also, you need to keep them on the same tone.

And as for octave shifts; only if you mean the whole octave so it's not offkey XD You really should change the octave to whatever octave the UTAU was recorded in.

So, for Hayao, usually I move the UST down to C3
    Same with any other males.

For any females, it's usually C4/C5.

    EDIT:
OHWAIT. OCTAVE SHIFTS AS IN RECORDINGS OR USTS?
This is why Moe was like "spam" XD You need to explain yourself better instead of just posting one line.

    Oh, yeah, as in "recordings".
    Okayso.
I honestly have no need for them, because my range in UTAU is pretty fantastic. Hayao sounds perfect at what I recorded him for, C3 with flags, but he'll sound fine (with some pronunciation issues) in girl's octaves, and lower than he's supposed to be.

But I've seen UTAUloids that can't go out of the octave they've been recorded in without sounding completely screwed over XD So it depends on the bank.
