    Post by Rayshia on Wed Mar 10, 2010 9:40 am

    Basically, I'm working on the Mamoritai UST, and I have discovered a problem. It sounds... Really robotic. I mainly use Defoko to create my USTs, then upload them, and adjust them individually for the voice I plan to use it later.

    The UST sounds really robotic compared to BoA's voice, as to be expected, but I'm wondering if the quality can be improved. Is it just because I'm using Defoko, or is it something else?

    So basically, I'm asking you, Guest-senpai, do you know any ways to make an UTAU sound more human like without using a triphonic voicebank?

    Pitch Bends,
    I'm not an expert on them but by using pitch bends you can give the Utauoild more emotion.

    I belive Chasing Fireflies knows allot about them. ^^;;

    Rayshia-chan,I think that most UTAUs is sound like robotic.(Can I say it is a characteristic?)
    In my opinion,
    First, you need to choose a good voicebank!!!
    I think triphonic voicebank is NOT the best way to make UTAU sound more human, some CV voicebanks is better than triphonic voicebank(in my opinion only).
    Second, I will enter some word in flags,I enter H30h25 and set the BRE=20 mostly. It MUST enter by yourself because different song have different feeling and than enter different words.

    That are my ideas only.You didn't have to follow it.
    I am looking for your ust.^^

    Well, I think it mostly depends on which voice you use. Sure, Defoko can sound human, but only with the right adjustments, like pitch bends. But I think that takes a lot more time, and sometimes makes it sound weird xD
    If an UTAU is recorded withouth any static or background noise, it's a lot easier to make them sound human ^^
    You might want to try overlapping notes, that could help as well (though I'm still no expert at that xD)

    Yeah, its all about pitch bends IMO.
    I guess I would have to see the ust to understand what you mean by robotic.

    I don't know Q_Q

    Well I guess the voice of the voicebank is sort of one thing, cuz I whispered Kirin's vb... and some UTAU have those other voice files that they shout
    pitch bends work, on the Blah Blah Endless Night and Romantic Night and Night Fever, they have those, and instead of plain "fu", with a pitch bend, they sound like "fu!" like when you say "woot!" or something lol.

    edit: you scared me with (username) tag. D: but I should try that sometime, xD

    I would suggest using pitch bends, and applying flags to add tone to the voice. The gender flags can make the note slightly higher or lower pitched and more wide or closed.
    Ummmmm.... Triphonic are a good way to make a voice sound human, OR you can use the properties to apply specfiic preutterance and overlap to each note to make it sound more human. It's a cheap way for a smooth sound, but it's kind of difficult to do. ^^;

    W-Who, me? o///o Um... well, yeah! Definitely use Mode2 for pitch bends, voice squeaks, vibrato, etc. It really helps if you sing it through yourself and pay attention to how you bend your voice, which notes you put vibrato on, which notes you accent (don't forget about the envelope tool, it's there for a reason!). If you're going for a sweeter or a darker voice, gender flags help, and I'm not really sure about all the other flags but there's a list somewhere around here of a bunch of them, it might help to mess around with those. ^__^ Good luck!

    (my arm kills if anyone would love to know that information~)

    I agree with the advice given~ it also depends on the voice bank too~ maybe try others and see what sounds good? And then you'll know whether it's the ust you need to edit or the utau singing it? and those envelopes things too? They sound good when used specially on the vowel sounds? Probably? That's what I do to make them er... less robotic? On the ust I'm making and some others too. =A=||| I-I feel lame...

    D-did I even make any sense or have any good advice...? OTL

    Though I'm no expert, using pitch bends like everyone else is a good way to do it. Although, try not to compare UTAU with real singers too much, or you'll get disheartened. Instead, try to aim for being at the best quality an UTAU can be. I hope that helps, me being a novice and all.

    wow, ( username )-senpai tag confused me xD. Don't scare me like that plz XD. I am not someone to ask as of yet, ;d.

    I'd agree on pitchbends. I've been using them recently in creating a ust because making in MMV didn't seem to quite get the right pitch profile gah (of course I hadn't known how to zoom in at that point so I may just do it over now that I do, yay xD).

    But the thing is... I don't know how to use Mode2 and overlap notes and stuff... ^^; (I'm a noob, I know.) If anyone could help with this, then I'd be so grateful!

    Well, umm umm actually though.... ;u;/

    Well-done pitch bends is only half of it. You need good recordings and a well-set .oto file configuration.

    I mean, an UTAU can sing a song decently without any pitchbends at all. (With just vibrato, I mean;Wink
    Pitchbends at the begining really just give the notes accent. (Like, make them sound more stressed, or un-stressed?)

    If your UTAU is really staticy, of course it won't sound natural, but if it just catches alot of breath in the recordings, it can be fixed by adding the proper modulations. (Such as 0BRE and Y0 flag)

    Also, how you set your oto file effects your UTAU's pronounciation. Putting your Overlap and Top of Note with the same values causes it to sound more flowy, (Like french?) and the consonants are kind of muted by the vowels, and a large gap between Overlap and Top of Note makes your UTAU sing with stacatto on faster songs. You want the right gap so that the recordings flow together as neatly as possible so that the consonants are loud enough, but the notes still flow decently;;;
    Hope I wasn't too confusing, because I'm not really good at giving instructions or teaching anything;;; ahaaaa...

    ALSO.

    Uhurr, really what I used was an awesomely expensive microphone, and pure luck man.
    Pure luck.
    Sometimes the way the ust is set up helps too.
    Pitch bends are awesome, and oto's are a must aswell, unless you're a saint and your utau doesn't get all... kjhsdkfljashfdlj without them.
    Apparently OREMO is supposed to be clearer than Audacity recordingwise, but I use audacity so idk. xD xD

    It's all in the pitch blending and the way the oto.ini is configured really. You can try using someone other than Defoko as well. Personally I use Teto but lately I've been using Ritsu to make the Hikari/Simple and Clean UST.

    BRE is brevity, but it's good to keep it low.

    I usually test pitchbends with a voice which sounds better with them (not being biased or anything, but Aline pitchbends very easily, so, I use her to test XD). About the bit of roboticism, if it's in the transition between notes, it's inevitable, and can be diminished with a VCV VB. Vibratos in longer notes may also help a lot, if you know how to properly configure them.
