    VCV versus Preutterance and Overlap Abuse

    Post by Orochi Herman on Sat Apr 24, 2010 2:40 pm

    For the non VCV voicebanks, will preutterance and overlap save the show for them, or are VCVs the way to go these days?

    Well, Mayu was mistaken for VCV a few times, and I didn't even abuse anything... but of course, when I actually tried recording VCV it sounded alot more human.

    That is all I have to say.

    While VCV is the way to go, in my opinion, the old voice banks shouldn't go away as they have a nostalgic feeling to them.

    I did see Neko Kanochi's VCV... it's literally files that are VCV. like one file is just "o shi" not "__すすしそさそし" with an oto... (I wonder if I have the old VB now xD;) so that's like VCV in CV style o.o

    Sometimes the CV->VCV plugin makes usts sound horrible lol...

    ...and the preutterance and overlap does save Kirin xD

    And what Zeny said. I mean, Teto before her VCV, people thought she was equal to Vocaloid. And if the world is populated with VCV voicebanks, what will happen to the CV?!

    Also, VCV only messes up USTs that were made using mode one, as it makes pitch bends based on the location of the beginning of the note. VCV should have the beginning of the note farther back, so it kills the pitch bends.

    Nn. Technically, a normal CV-based library can sound almost as equal as a VCV library. (The only difference is that, without Vowel to Vowel recordings, a CV library can't pronounce diphones naturally.)

    You can set the oto file on a CV to sound as natural as a VCV. (by setting the proper amount of space before a consonant)

    So I say making while a CV library is easier from scratch and more organized than a VCV one; Making the voice sound natural is easier with VCV, but not impossible with CV.

    JEEBUS. NANA WIN.

    As much as I love how VCVs sound sometimes, they are a pain in the hindquarters to configure.
    CVs can be made to sound as good as VCVs, anyway, as is obvious by that AMAZINGGODLYHOLYCOW Nana sample there.

    The proof is in the pudding.
    Of their doom. *shotshotdead*

    I'm sticking with overlap abuse, kthx.

    ...After that it purely depends on the voicebank. Nana sounds the most human because she was professionally recorded.

    Not only that; Someone spent ages on the UST there. ^^;;
    The stringing is completely different to default, and that probably helped a lot.

    Okay, I love Pre-utterance and Overlap to death now that I figured out that you actually have to clear the boxes and fit USTs to your UTAUloids settings.

    I now have a habit of messing with other people's oto files when things aren't working correctly. ^^;

    But VCVs do REALLY help. D: As long as they are done correctly.

    So Answer:
    If you have time and can be bothered, and like how VCVs flow together; feel free to do them.
    But if you don't really like them, nor have the time, don't feel pressured ^^; It's not like they're the magical fix for things, Y'know?

    nana's was nice because she has both long and short consonant-vowel syllables.
