Atem comes from a wrong romanization. They thought it'd be like Gundam (which is spelled as "gandamu" in kana and spoke like such in Japanese).

Guess the translation team couldn't read hieroglyphics... xD Well I can read them basic name-spelling signs! That's all they needed!
